The Four Major Layers of the Canal☺
Functions of each layer:
1. The mucosa is the inside layer that is an simple columnar epithelium and contains the glands and gastric pits.
2. The submucosa is beneath the mucosa and is made of connective tissues and consist of blood vessels, nerve endings, and lymph structures.
3. The muscularis externa is circular and longitudinal and is the
twitching muscle layer that dislodges food particles that have adhered to the mucosa.
4. The serosa is the outermost layer and has a single layer of fluid producing cells.

Gastric Juice Section of the Tummy
Gastric juice substances consist of: Pepsin, Hydrochloric acid, Intrinsic factor, Mucus, Water. Pepsin Enzyme; digests the proteins. Hydrochloric acid Denatures proteins; decreases the pH (for optimum pepsin function. Intrinsic; factor protects and allows later absorption of vitamin B12. Mucus lubricates chyme; protects stomach lining. Water; Dilutes food and other substances; facilitates mixing |
